the ghost

Just another morning.  Eleni woke up and laid there, dreading spending another day trapped in the hamster wheel she called “the office”.  She laid there and as always, glanced at the antique box that she picked up in a charming little shop that she picked up in the village years ago that she could never bring her self to open.

“Eleni, open the box!” said the voice of the ghost. Eleni got up and got ready to face the day.

After a day of endless meetings, emails and phone calls she was finally on her way home, no more excited than she was on her way into work. She arrived home, changed into her house cloths knowing full well that she would not leave again until she went to work the next day.  She made dinner, her husband came home, they ate, they watched TV and then they went to bed.

“Open the box…it is my gift to you!”

God another day! Eleni got up too late and too tired to shower.  She quickly got ready, grabbed her things and ran out the front door, dropping everything on the way to her car. She got a speeding ticket on her way into work and arrived forty minutes late…no coffee.  That evening she arrived home, changed into her house cloths, made dinner, her husband came home, they ate, they watched, TV and then they went to bed.

Ahh finally the weekend.  Eleni smiled as she realized the day was hers to do as she pleased. Her husbands phone rang as he slept next to her. He answered, said he couldn’t talk and hung up.  It was her.

“Why aren’t you listening to me? Open the box I sent you!”

Eleni got up and and got ready, and left.  She drove around all day doing errands and wasting time.  Anything was better than going home to face her reality.  She went to the grocery store, the cleaners, and the local Starbucks. Finally the day got late and Eleni decided to head home.  She stared at the TV not really watching.  He was sitting next to her.  She picked up a book to read but could not focus.  She never read anymore.  She never wrote anymore.  Never picked up a brush anymore. Finally, they went to bed.  She leaned over to him, he kissed her, and quickly laid back to go to sleep.

It’s 2am and Eleni wakes up screaming from another night terror. Drenched with sweat and tears, Eleni takes a minute and realizes it was just a bad dream. That’s all, just a dream.  He woke up.  “Sssshh it’s okay, just a dream” and then he went right back to sleep.

“Listen to me!! Open the box!!”

Eleni laid there until finally she fell back to sleep.

It was Sunday.  Day 2 of the two days in which we live our lives each week.  Eleni opened her eyes.

“Please I beg you to listen!!!”

Eleni’s glance went from the antique box to the suitcase that was still sitting packed in her closet from their last trip that they spent in silence. She got up and got ready. She put on her shoes and coat and sat at the edge of her bed staring at the box.  He was sleeping. She stared for what seemed like hours.  Finally she opened the box.  There was nothing in the box but it was not empty. She grabbed her suitcase and the antique box, she kissed him on the forehead, she took the house key of her key chain and left it on the dresser where the antique box once stood, she smiled and waved good-bye to the ghost that sat in chair in the corner of the bedroom, she walked out the door and drove away.

“Good-bye Eleni”  said the ghost smiling back as she watched Eleni drive away.

About the writer

So yes, you've guessed it...I am in the process of getting divorced. Now surely I've had many challenges along the way, but I can honestly say that it has truly been the most eye opening experience of my life. Although it's never what you plan or hope for and it can be truly devastating when you realize it's happening, but it can also have a silver lining if you look for it...once you get through the guilt, anger, self-loathing, several pints of Haagen Dazs and a crate or two of wine of course. My divorce not only got me out of a very unhealthy relationship, but it also opened the door for me to reshape my entire life. So after a year of loafing, I am getting my ass off my couch and into gear to transform everything that I know has not been doing me any justice in my life. I went from trying to be the perfect daughter to trying to be the perfect wife, constantly accepting that which was imposed on me and living my life on auto pilot. Well, all that is about to change. 2012 is finally over and the new year is here, and this will be the year that I change my life and make it what I want it to be. This blog will document my experiences and hopefully help other men and women in the same boat to find some sort of inspiration. I would also like to hear from those of you who have some tips, advice or inspiring stories of your own to share. For many of us, just knowing that there are others who have lived to tell their stories with somewhat of a happy ending, is inspiration enough. Happy New Year!!!
